Bathurst Explanatory Notes (1998)

Abstract

The Bathurst 1:250 000 map sheet area in central eastern New South Wales comprises undulating hilly terrain. Largely on the western fall of the Great Dividing Range and geologically in the central eastern Lachlan Fold Belt. These explanatory notes are a product of a joint project between the Geological Survey of New South Wales and the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) under the National Geoscience Mapping Accord. For the first time in New South Wales mapping and interpretation were guided and assisted by detailed digital airborne magnetic and radiometric data. The rock units in the area have been described systematically. They record a geological history extending from the Middle Ordovician to the present, Details of the geophysical surveys are given, together with summary information on geophysical features and signatures of various rock sequences. Major structural and metamorphic features have been identifies. Regolith-landform features are described and their history of development discussed. Importantly, Ordovician rocks within the area are host to major Cu-Au porphyry and skarn deposit types within the map sheet area provide useful indicators fro exploration.
